Hourly Paid Lecturer in Games Art & Design

The University of Brighton has an occasional need for Lecturers on an hourly paid basis to supplement its core teaching staff base, to provide specialist input to courses and to meet unpredictable or short term demands for teaching, for example on short courses or for short term sickness absence, as and when required. Working as an Hourly Paid Lecturer (HPL) also provides an opportunity to gain experience within the University in particular areas, and to gain knowledge and expertise. 

We are currently looking to engage an HPL to contribute to the delivery of our Games Art & Design programme at Level 4 and Level 5. Teaching will include contribution to core games design modules and assisting students in their creative practices in conjunction with existing technical support. You will work closely with the Module Leader to devise and run practical workshops using both digital and analogue methods and materials. Projects might include character design, creating 2D and 3D game environments, exploring digital aesthetics and game principles. A working knowledge of programmes such as Blender, Cinema 4D, Unity or Unreal is useful.

HPLs will deliver some or all of the following activities depending on the length of the assignment and what is required:

- Deliver lectures, practical seminars, workshops and tutorials
- Carry out associated administrative tasks within an established programme of study
- Set and mark assignments, assess the work and progress of students and provide constructive feedback to students
- Co-ordinate small modules in own subject area
- Attend and participate in module team meetings, liaising with colleagues as necessary
- Engage in the requisite scholarly activity that will maintain their familiarity with current developments in their academic field which is necessary for the preservation of their academic standing
- Reflect on practice and development of teaching and learning skills

As well as the above experience, you will need:

- A postgraduate qualification and/or extensive relevant professional experience in the discipline
- The ability to work flexibly and collegiately with academic and administrative colleagues
- The ability to devise teaching materials suitable for teaching undergraduate students
- Knowledge of a variety of pedagogic approaches, relevant to Higher Education (HE)
- A student-centred attitude including an appreciation of the diverse backgrounds of HE students and the academic and personal issues they typically encounter while at university
- An ability to communicate clearly, engagingly and positively with a diverse audience
- An ability to continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism
- Understanding of equal opportunities in relation to academic content and issues relating to student need

Ideally, you will have a teaching qualification or other professional recognition and have experience of teaching and assessment.

The rate of pay is £47.15 per contact hour. This covers the time spent teaching and any associated preparation or assessment time. The maximum hours offered would be 50 over the course of the academic year.
