This is an exciting opportunity to join our School as part of a highly creative and experienced team providing technical resource and demonstrations to support teaching activities in Architecture and Design.

Using your creative designing and making experience and skills, you will deliver a broad range of inspiring designing and making opportunities, training and advice to all students from complete beginners to post-graduate professionals, enabling them to develop into confident and inquisitive designers and communicators.  

Your responsibilities will be to organise and provide, in consultation with the Technical Manager, technical services in the workshops and provide technical support, tutorials and workshop inductions for students and staff using these workshops. You will provide creative challenge, and push students to experiment with and explore materials and processes using your skills as a creative designer in the field of product or spatial design.  A key part of your post will be to ensure that safe codes of practice are maintained, and current Health and Safety guidelines are adhered to in order to make the work area a safe place for staff and students. 

It is essential that you can work independently in a highly organised manner, contributing to team decision-making in a positive and professional way, and commit to the development of designing and making across the wider School as we build our national reputation as a centre of creativity and sustainability excellence.  In order to be successful in this post, you should have:

  • Experience of specific techniques, skills and media related to the subject areas of Architecture and Design. 
  • Experience of a range of workshop techniques and skills relating to wood, metal, plastic and casting.
  • In-depth knowledge and the communication skills to demonstrate a wide range of approaches to designing, workshop making techniques and processes. 
  • A commitment to learning new approaches and developments in the design field, and apply these processes flexibly and adapt them, using knowledge of safe working practices, to explore a wide range of creative scenarios.  

Experience of laser cutting, 3D printing and reprographics processes using industry standard software would be advantageous, but not essential.
