This is an opportunity to be part of a close-knit team responsible for enterprise level IT infrastructure. You will be involved in the wide-ranging activities of the Network Services team, developing, managing, and supporting the university's critical network services.
Working closely with team members, you will liaise directly with colleagues across all departments to understand requirements and issues, devising high quality, innovative solutions for a variety of needs and providing technical advice in clear practical terms.
Key to the role is:
- an ability to manage and maintain infrastructure to provide secure, reliable networks which underpin every aspect of the university's academic and administrative operations.
- An ability to work collaboratively, sharing knowledge and respecting the experience and capabilities of others.
- A strong sense of customer service with an ability to empathise with the needs of others, if necessary translating these to and from technological terms.
- experience of working in a methodical, accountable way observing change control procedures and collaborating with colleagues to share information and knowledge.
With plenty of opportunity to develop your range of skills across a broad range of technologies, this is a hands-on role that requires a solid understanding of the ISO network model underpinning detailed knowledge of LAN and WAN protocols and technologies.
The successful applicant will have extensive practical experience of handling and configuring enterprise routers, switches, firewalls, application delivery controllers, wireless controllers and network service appliances, carrying out routine maintenance, fault-diagnosis and monitoring performance.
This is a full-time permanent position based on the Moulsecoomb campus and involves transporting bulky and heavy equipment and travelling to other sites, installing and maintaining networks in buildings across several campuses which may not be accessible by public transport. You will have access to a pooled university vehicle.
The role allows for hybrid working on campus and at the employee's home with flexibility of working hours, while occasional work outside of normal business hours is expected, to minimise disruption to university operations.
The university offers a range of attractive benefits including a generous pension scheme, information of which can be found on our website. In addition, to the eight Bank Holidays, there are university discretionary days between Christmas and New Year.
The University is committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive environment for all staff regardless of age, disability, family or caring responsibilities, gender identity, marital status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief (including non-belief), sex and sexual orientation. We embrace equality and diversity in our working, learning, research and teaching environment and are committed to maintaining a supportive and inclusive community. We particularly encourage applicants from Minority Ethnic backgrounds because the University is under-represented by Minority Ethnic staff.
For the vast majority of our roles, we operate an agile working system with time split between working on campus and at the employee's home. It is the University's expectation that home working will take place within the UK.
Further information about working for us, as well as the wide range of benefits we offer, can be found in the working with us section of our vacancies page.
