Hourly Paid Lecturer

School of Applied Social Science

Location:  Brighton - Falmer
Salary:  £35,845 to £42,792 per annum
£46.45 to £55.45 per contact hour

The University of Brighton are looking for visiting lecturers to teach into the following undergraduate courses:

  • BA (Hons) Criminology
  • BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology
  • BA (Hons) Psychology and Criminology

The above courses are recruiting for all year levels, including specific and general criminological content modules.

Applicants are sought who have a good understanding of core criminological knowledge at undergraduate level.

The rate of pay is £46.45 per contact hour. This covers the time spent teaching and any associated preparation or assessment time. The maximum hours offered would be 50 over the course of the academic year.

  • Candidates should be prepared to deliver lectures, practical seminars, workshops and tutorials.
  • Carry associated administrative tasks within an established programme of study.
  • Set and mark assignments, assess the work and progress of students and provide constructive feedback to students 
  • May co-ordinate small modules, in own subject area 
  • Attend and participate in module team meetings, liaising with colleagues as necessary 
  • Engage in the requisite scholarly activity that will maintain their familiarity with current developments in their academic field which is necessary for the preservation of their academic standing 
  • Reflect on practice and development of teaching and learning skills 
  • Continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism 
  • Understand equal opportunities in relation to academic content and issues relating to student need. 

The successful candidate will have:


  • A postgraduate qualification and/or extensive relevant professional experience in the discipline.  
  • Ability to work flexibly and collegiately with academic and administrative colleagues
  • Ability to devise teaching materials suitable for teaching undergraduate students
  • Knowledge of a variety of pedagogic approaches, relevant to higher education
  • Student-centred attitudes including an appreciation of the diverse backgrounds of HE students and the academic and personal issues they typically encounter while at university along with good communication skills


  • Qualification or other professional recognition in teaching
  • Previous experience of teaching and assessment
